Sr. Software Engineer (AI-Augmented) — Full Time, 6-Month Contract, Remote

Role Summary

You'll join a small team building full-stack web and desktop applications, high-performance React data products and dashboards, as well as integrating AI into engineering workflows and end user products.

Beyond building, you'll provide technical strategy consulting — helping shape AI-enabled development workflows, establishing engineering best practices, and driving code maintainability across projects. We care deeply about flexibility, simplicity, extensibility, and investing in testing and documentation that keeps systems healthy as they grow.

You'll work independently with support from Zoo Hill Data leadership, and you'll need to be flexible enough to plug into different projects as priorities shift.

What You'll Build

Our clients operate in market research across entertainment, sports, and media — domains with large, complex datasets including syndicated survey data, audience measurement, and consumer insights. You'll build the tools that make this data accessible, interactive, and actionable.

  • High-performance React dashboards — Interactive, data-rich interfaces that handle complex data visualization, filtering, and real-time updates at scale.
  • AI-powered query and insights systems — Pipelines that translate business questions into accurate SQL against complex enterprise databases. Users ask in plain English; the system resolves dimensions, filters, and measures to produce correct queries and present results in clear, actionable views.
  • Full-stack web applications — End-to-end products using modern frameworks (TanStack Start, React, TypeScript) with AI-accelerated development workflows.
  • Shared UI components and data patterns — Reusable dashboard components, data fetching patterns, and design system elements that maintain consistency and accelerate development across projects.
  • Desktop developer tools — Internal tooling that enhances AI-powered development workflows, giving agents and developers richer interfaces for collaboration and productivity.
  • Document intelligence tools — AI systems that operate across large repositories of research reports and client deliverables to surface patterns, answer questions, and generate summaries.

Required Experience

  • You've built production apps, systems, and data pipelines where AI (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar) was a core method to generate the code efficiently — and you can talk through specific experiences where you felt the AI starting to struggle, and how you approached restructuring to keep it productive
  • You have strong fundamentals: data modeling, API design, system architecture, debugging production issues
  • Full-stack web development experience with React and TypeScript. Experience with TanStack Start (or a proven track record of rapidly learning modern full-stack frameworks) is required — this is our primary stack
  • You're proficient in Python for backend and data pipeline work
  • You're comfortable living in a terminal — whether it's Warp, iTerm, or your own custom setup, you navigate and build fluently from the command line
  • You can work independently — you'll own the technical direction day-to-day with periodic alignment from leadership

Nice to Have

  • Experience with GCP and/or Snowflake
  • Background in data engineering or data science
  • Experience building user-facing AI tools (not just backend pipelines)
  • Experience designing feedback loops and self-correcting AI systems
  • See more about who we are and what we're looking on our website

Working Arrangement

  • Remote
  • You'll work independently with regular check-ins from Zoo Hill Data leadership
  • You'll plug into different client projects and internal products as needs evolve — flexibility and context-switching are part of the job
  • Expect to move fast — the team values shipping working software over lengthy design phases
